Sydney is the premier and largest data center market in Australia, holding roughly 60% of the nation's capacity¹ As AI workloads grow and data sovereignty regulations tighten, enterprises face a dual challenge: scale fast and stay compliant. Getting the infrastructure foundation right, with a partner who addresses both, is what determines whether these two demands reinforce each other or pull in opposite directions.

Sydney's position in the digital economy

Sydney is Australia's primary digital gateway and a key node in the Asia Pacific region.

The city hosts a concentration of Australia's major banks, fintechs, technology firms, and government agencies. These organizations require infrastructure that is high-performing, compliant, and sovereign, keeping sensitive data within Australian jurisdiction. IDC projects Australian cloud services will nearly double from A$12.2 billion in 2022 to A$22.4 billion by 2026².

The sustainability imperative

Sustainability in Sydney is no longer just a corporate preference. On 23 March 2026, the Australian Government released formal expectations for data center and AI infrastructure developers⁴. The Clean Energy Finance Corporation projects that data centers could account for up to 11 percent of Australia's total electricity consumption by 2035⁴, up from roughly 1 percent today⁵. Enterprises choosing a colocation partner are making an energy procurement decision that will shape their Scope 2 emissions profile for years.

Our Sydney facilities back that up with verifiable credentials:

100% renewable electricity matched since January 2024, via wind energy from the Stockyard Hill wind farm through Origin Energy⁶
LEED Gold and NABERS certification at SYD10 & SYD11
SYD11 incorporates high-efficiency free-cooling architecture, designed to reduce energy consumption
ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 50001 (energy management)
$6 billion in green bonds issued since 2015, making Digital Realty the data center industry's leading green bond issuer⁷

For enterprises colocating in Sydney, these credentials directly support your Scope 2 reporting and contribute to your organization's decarbonization strategy and net-zero targets.

Data sovereignty in practice

For Australian enterprises, data sovereignty is not abstract. The Privacy Act, APRA's CPS 234, and sector-specific regulations require that sensitive data, particularly from financial, healthcare, and government workloads, remains within Australian jurisdiction and under Australian law.

Colocation in Sydney, with direct on-campus access to cloud providers, resolves both.

Our Erskine Park campus enables enterprises:

Data residency in Australia: your data stays within Australian jurisdiction, meeting Privacy Act and APRA CPS 234 requirements
Direct private access to AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, IBM, and Oracle, without routing sensitive workloads through the public internet
SCEC and ASIO T4 security capability at both SYD10 and SYD11, the standard for government and highly regulated workloads

Why interconnection matters for AI workloads

Data has gravity. As data accumulates in a location, moving it becomes costly and slow. For latency-sensitive AI inference workloads like fraud detection, risk decisioning, and real-time customer analytics, the compute needs to be close to the data.

Our Erskine Park campus connects customers to more than 20 cloud and network service providers from a single location. ServiceFabric® enables private, low-latency connections to hyperscaler on-ramps directly from within the campus, keeping sensitive workloads off the public internet, while Campus Connect links SYD10 and SYD11 on the same campus.

How sustainable are Digital Realty's Sydney data centers?

Our Sydney facilities have been matched with 100% renewable electricity since January 2024, powered by wind energy from the Stockyard Hill wind farm via Origin Energy. This is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70,000 tons annually across Australian operations. SYD10 & SYD11 hold LEED Gold and NABERS certification. Both facilities carry ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certifications. We have issued $6 billion in green bonds since 2015, making us the data center industry's leading green bond issuer.

What is a Tier 1 data center market?

A Tier 1 data center market is defined by its role as a major telecommunications, financial, and internet hub with significant built-out capacity and ecosystem density. Sydney is Australia's dormant market, sharing that status in the Asia Pacific region with Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. Sydney accounts for roughly 60% of Australia's total built-out data center capacity.

What industries does Digital Realty serve in Sydney?

Our Sydney campus serves enterprises across financial services, technology, and professional services, all of which carry significant data sovereignty and compliance requirements. The Sydney sites include common third-party attestations used in financial services vendor reviews such as controls reporting (SOC 1/2/3), security management (ISO 9001/14001/ 27001), and payment/card environments (PCI-DSS) while it supports the needs of technology companies deploying AI inference it workloads with low-latency cloud connectivity.
