For more than two decades, Atlanta has built its reputation as a dynamic technology and business center. The city is home to the world's busiest airport, a dense concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, and widely recognized as the payment processing capital of the United States. It's a place where commerce, connectivity, and technology have long converged.

Today, that legacy is entering a new chapter. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption accelerates, infrastructure is at the heart of Atlanta's next phase of growth. The workloads driving that growth are larger, faster, and more demanding than anything the market has supported before.

AI is transforming how organizations across industries operate. They use it to analyze data, detect fraud, optimize operations, and make decisions in real time. As these workloads grow more demanding, infrastructure strategy matters more than ever, and data location is now closely tied to business performance. Atlanta data centers help enterprises build the digital foundation they need today while positioning them for the next generation of AI.

The evolution of Atlanta's financial and technology ecosystem

Atlanta's reputation as a business and technology hub stretches back more than 175 years. Today, the city is home to 16 Fortune 500 companies, including The Coca-Cola Company, Delta Air Lines, and UPS. A thriving community of fintech innovators, payment processors, and global enterprises rounds out the ecosystem. That economic depth has long attracted the digital infrastructure to match.

Atlanta's rise as "Transaction Alley" is central to that story. Roughly 70% of all U.S. payment transactions are processed in Georgia, and six of the ten largest U.S. payment processing firms are headquartered in the state. The sector generates more than $70 billion in annual revenue and employs more than 40,000 people. This concentration of financial technology has made Atlanta a global payments capital. Payments depend on speed and reliability; it has also attracted the resilient, low-latency digital infrastructure required to support it.

As cloud adoption accelerates, organizations are rethinking their infrastructure strategy and evaluating where data lives and how it moves. They need to support payment networks, fraud detection, and real-time decisioning while facing increasingly data-intensive AI workloads. Atlanta has evolved into one of North America's leading colocation markets as a result, delivering something rare: scale and connectivity in a single market. Enterprises and cloud providers benefit from direct proximity to the payment processors and fintech firms that depend on it.

Why the Atlanta data center market continues to grow

Demand for digital infrastructure keeps rising as organizations modernize and prepare for AI. According to CBRE's H1 2026 North America Data Center Trends report, Atlanta is among the fastest-growing markets. The market ended 2025 with 1,459.2 MW of total inventory, up 458.8 MW year-over-year, making Atlanta the second-largest U.S. data center market behind Northern Virginia. The market recorded 456 MW of net absorption, and vacancy tightened to just 1.6% despite extraordinary delivery volume. That reflects sustained demand from cloud, AI, and enterprise users. AI has become a primary driver reshaping data center development, increasing the need for greater power density and advanced cooling.

Atlanta stands out because it delivers on multiple dimensions at once:

A global payments and fintech ecosystem. Atlanta supports one of the largest concentrations of payment processing and fintech companies in the world, where transaction processors, banks, and enterprises all depend on resilient, low-latency infrastructure. Being in the right market is no longer a logistical preference; it is a competitive decision. According to the Global Data Insights Survey, 70% of financial services firms have formal data strategies and 79% are embracing distributed data approaches. Where data lives now directly shapes how effectively organizations can deploy AI.

Strategic location. Atlanta sits at the crossroads of the southeastern United States, letting enterprises connect applications and users across the region and beyond. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the world's busiest, ensuring seamless global access, while a robust highway and rail network keeps the city connected to domestic markets.

AI infrastructure demand. AI workloads are growing larger and more complex, and enterprises increasingly need infrastructure that supports higher-density deployments without sacrificing performance. Atlanta's market has more than 3 GW of long-term power commitments and a pipeline of 2.9 GW under construction, the largest in the nation and surpassing Northern Virginia for the first time. That pipeline matters because AI scale can ultimately be constrained by available power.

Connectivity depth. Atlanta offers one of the Southeast's richest interconnection ecosystems, giving organizations direct access to cloud providers, network carriers, and financial partners. Our Atlanta metro provides the region's premier interconnection hub at 56 Marietta Street, where customers can access more than 300 partners, including 150 cloud, IT infrastructure, and network providers. The metro holds a 60% cloud on-ramp share, the highest in the market, so enterprises can reach the cloud and their partners without the latency that distance introduces.

Challenges and opportunities for AI infrastructure

AI is shifting how organizations think about infrastructure. They no longer view it as a utility to be provisioned but as a strategic asset to be positioned. That is why enterprises are asking harder business-impact questions: Where does our data reside? How do our applications communicate? How quickly can insights reach the people who need them?

Common infrastructure challenges include:

These challenges are real, but they also create clear opportunities. By placing infrastructure closer to users and data, organizations can reduce latency, improve operational efficiency, and build a stronger foundation for long-term AI initiatives. Atlanta is uniquely positioned to help enterprises meet that opportunity.

Our advantage in Atlanta

As a long-standing operator in the Southeast, we operate one of Atlanta’s largest and most connecting digital infrastructure ecosystems in Atlanta and the broader region. We give enterprises access to scalable colocation, deep interconnection, and an ecosystem built for performance at scale. Our infrastructure supports evolving workloads while preserving the flexibility enterprises need as requirements change.

Our flagship facility, ATL13 at 56 Marietta Street, is one of the Southeast's largest concentration of telecom companies and the region's premier interconnection hub. It's a carrier-rich environment built for the dense interconnection that financial services, payments, and enterprise organizations require. The facility connects via high-speed fiber to our ATL14 facility at 250 Williams Street, with newly constructed capacity brought online in 2025 capable of accommodating high density and liquid cooled AI workloads. Together the two -form our Atlanta connected campus, offering more than 11,000 cross connects between 300+ customers, with an additional campus (ATL15 and ATL16 at our Ft. Gillem campus) designed to deliver additional Hyperscale and Colocation capacity to our Atlanta presence by approximately 2028. From this hub, customers can reach cloud providers, carriers, and partners across the globe. The Digital Realty Internet Exchange (DRIX) is one of the highest-used programs at our Atlanta facilities, giving customers access to a high-performance peering fabric that reduces latency and lowers costs by connecting directly to destination networks.

Atlanta also reflects our broader sustainability commitments. Georgia Power has announced initiatives related to renewable energy, battery storage, and grid modernization, which supports growth sustainably, including a new program lets large customers source clean energy directly from independent solar, wind, and battery projects. Because environmental sustainability requirements are increasingly tied to regulatory standards and investor expectations, partnering with a sustainable provider is a robust long-term strategy.

The next wave: AI and enterprise infrastructure

Organizations across Atlanta's industries are rapidly embedding AI into their operations. Fintech uses it for fraud detection and risk modeling. Healthcare applies it to predictive analytics. Entertainment uses it for content optimization. These applications share a common requirement: they need to process massive datasets with minimal latency, reliably, and at scale.

Leading enterprises are bringing their applications closer to the data they depend on. This approach is anchored in the concept of Data Gravity, and it improves performance, reduces complexity, and creates a more resilient operational foundation. Atlanta's mix of payment processors, enterprise headquarters, and cloud connectivity makes it one of the most important metros for this next phase of enterprise AI adoption.
