The world today is inundated with data. And with that massive amount of data comes a need for immense data centers.
Data Center Knowledge, a prominent online source for news and information about data centers, recognizes that “the mega-data center has become a staple of our global technology infrastructure.” To that end, they recently compiled a list of the world’s largest data centers.
Ranging anywhere from 400,000 to 1.1 million square feet, Data Center Knowledge’s list covers single-building facilities dedicated to data center use—they’ve excluded multi-facility campuses and mixed-use buildings. Although we definitely recommend giving the list a look, we’re proud to say that we have a hand in the world’s largest data center.
At the top of the list? 350 East Cermak in Chicago, coming in at 1.1 million square feet. 350 East Cermak is home to the Lakeside Technology Center. It was converted to telecom use in 1999, and today is one of the world’s largest carrier hotels. It’s also “the nerve center for Chicago’s commodity markets, housing data centers for financial firms attracted by the wealth of peering and connectivity providers among the 70 tenants.”
As Data Center Knowledge notes, one of the most distinctive features of the facility is its cooling system—an 8.5 million gallon tank of a refrigerated brine-like liquid. You can find more information about that cooling system and the rest of the data center here.
How does Telx play into the equation at 350 East Cermak? Since 2006, the Telx CHI1 data center has been active in the Lakeside Technology Center, providing access to over 40 of the leading domestic and international carriers and physical connection points of the world’s telecommunications networks and Internet backbones.
With over 8 stories, 59,000 square feet, 8000 kW utility power capacity, N+1-2N UPS redundancy, 24x365 manned security, SOC 2 compliance, and more, CHI1 at 350 East Cermak is a top-of-the-line data center serving some of Chicago’s most important digital infrastructure. We are glad to be a part of Lakeside Technology Center, and were excited to see it top off the list of the world’s largest data centers.
