The 3 Big Trends at NAB 2013

Last week, Telx was a sponsor of NAB Disruptive Media. The NAB Show, with over 92,000 media and entertainment professional attending, is the world's largest event covering the development, management, and delivery of content.

The 3 Big Trends at NAB 2013 were:

1. Ultra HD TV (aka 4K)
The big issues are when can it be broadcasted, distributed, and delivered. There are huge challenges including bandwidth constraints and cost. The highest quality 1080p YouTube videos top out at about 2 Mbps. Ultra HD video needs to be delivered at 50-60 Mbps. And, a new Samsung 85-inch UHDTV (3840 x 2160) — 4 times the resolution of a HDTV (1920 x 1080) —will cost $40,000.

2. Second Screen
The big issues are how to create an engaging 2nd screen experience and how to monetize? According to Nielsen and Flurry, 108m people watched the Super Bowl 2013 and 116m people launched app sessions during the Super Bowl.

And yesterday, David Carr, New York Times, wrote when watching the Masters [golf tournament at Augusta, GA], for him, "The second screen experience slowly replaced the first — I barely looked up at the television."

3. The Future of Distribution
The big issues are how to stop the cord cutting — a la carte programming —and the power struggle between content providers - Comcast, DirecTV, Netflix, Amazon, others — and the content owners.
