Service Exchange and the Benefits of a Multi-Cloud Environment

December 7, 2016  |  Written by Okey Keke, Sr. Solutions Architect

In the virtual blink of an eye, cloud strategies have evolved from enterprises and small businesses simply being in the cloud, to individualized multi-cloud strategies where organizations work with multiple cloud providers. For a host of reasons which we will explore below, it’s becoming more and more imperative that enterprises embrace a multi-cloud strategy if they want IT to be a true business advantage.

The first thing to realize is that many enterprises have already adopted a multi-cloud strategy. Because of this, the major cloud providers are no longer developing tools that only work on their platform. That would isolate their customers, and those providers realize that it’s not worth it to do so. Instead, in order to maximize the potential exposure and use of their product, they are making it compatible with all major clouds.

Multi-cloud strategies are driven by factors both technological and economic. While it’s true that a true multi-cloud environment gives customers the ability to do more shopping around, both for price and features, most IT leaders would likely feel comfortable saying that the real advantage of multi-cloud is in its potential technological and business advantages.

A multi-cloud strategy allows you to spread not only workloads, but risk across multiple cloud environments. When seen through the lens of disaster recovery, this could potentially mean perennially safer data and less messy disaster recovery efforts.  It makes the phrase, “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” seem to make more sense than ever.

Multi-cloud also allows access to a wide range of geographical locations, making expanding your reach globally a much less daunting task. Where latency is a potential issue, proximity becomes a real advantage. At the same time, bypassing the public internet eliminates the issue of speed altogether.

Digital Realty’s newest offering, Service Exchange powered by Megaport, enables an organization to develop and deploy a multi-cloud strategy more easily, naturally, and cost effectively than ever before.

Thanks to Megaport, Service Exchange provides virtual private connections (Virtual Cross Connects) that can be easily managed via Digital Realty’s user-friendly MarketplacePORTAL platform. That means that virtually all of the top service providers are directly accessible (again, that means there’s no need to traverse the lengthy and at times dangerous public internet) not to mention other data centers in our network.

Ultimately, your IT department exists to solve problems, not create them. That’s why a multi-cloud solution makes sense. With tools and services becoming ever more cross-compatible, it makes sense that organizations want to find the exact right solution for their problem, rather than simply finding out how well their current solution can solve the problem at hand.

For organizations today, the cloud question is no longer one of “public or private,” it’s a matter of choosing the right cloud at the right time. Digital Realty’s Service Exchange powered by Megaport makes it possible for customers to discover not “the best of both worlds,” but the best of all possible worlds.
