Infographic: How do companies prepare for disasters?

More than ever before, companies across industries depend on digital programs and data to complete their day-to-day operations and meet core business objectives. In addition to ensuring high availability and optimal performance, organizations must be prepared for the unexpected. Inclement weather, natural disasters, equipment failure and more can bring activities to a halt and carry heavy expenses if entities lack systems that can assist with recovering information and resuming operations.

That's why disaster relief plans and solutions are so critical. In general, companies today are using one of two methods to safeguard their resources: mirrored sites and cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service. Mirrored sites, which are used by 62 percent of organizations, store data at the primary site and back up replicated information at a secondary site, through synchronous, asynchronous or hybrid replication. Cloud IaaS, which is used by 66 percent of businesses, restores data to or from a cloud-based environment.

Small and mid-sized businesses employ a number of strategies to boost disaster preparedness. The majority (71 percent) use server virtualization, 43 percent rely on the private cloud, 41 percent utilize the public cloud and 36 percent believe their mobile strategies have improved their readiness to handle disasters.

With the cloud, the average downtime between when a disaster strikes and operations are resumed is drastically reduced, from 8 hours for companies with no cloud strategy to 2.1 hours for those using the solution.  Another significant factor in efficient restoration is whether organizations use a disaster recovery facility, with the majority of businesses taking advantage of centers that enable them to restore operations in fewer than 24 hours.

As technology continues to infiltrate the business landscape, organizations will have greater need for disaster recovery solutions as well as increasingly robust options.
